The Room Ledger

An independent record of eighteen hotels, kept up by hand.

About the ledger

The Room Ledger is a small independent reference to eighteen hotels, kept by hand and read against its sources at intervals. It is not a booking service and has no commercial relationship with any house listed.

How the hotels were chosen

The list was fixed at eighteen so that every entry could be written and checked properly rather than gathered automatically. Four categories were set first, then houses were chosen inside them for the clarity of what they are: a building worth describing, a repeated room plan, a northern site governed by season, or a Canadian resort with substantial public rooms.

What the sources are

Entries are written from the operators' own published pages, from public mapping, and from published architectural and press coverage. Where a statement could not be confirmed against one of those, it was rewritten so that it stays true without the missing source. Where a chain runs several addresses, only the named address is described.

What is not here

There are no prices, no star classifications, no room counts, no guest reviews, no comparisons between houses and no reservation links. Nothing on the site is sponsored, and no operator has seen or approved any entry. Photographs illustrate the building or the plan and carry no text.

Reporting a correction

Details change when houses are refitted, renamed or closed for a season, and some of what is written here will fall out of date. If you find something wrong, write and say which entry and which line, and it will be checked against the source and altered. The address is on the contact page.
